2011 York/Sheridan Grad Show Website – Award-Winning Web Design

The 2011 York/Sheridan Grad Show website was a self-promotional project that showcased the graduating students of the York/Sheridan Design Programs. This innovative website earned multiple accolades, including the prestigious Lucidia Award for Web Design in 2011, as well as recognition from RGD Web Design and Applied Arts awards.

A standout feature of the website was its custom content management system (CMS), which empowered students to submit and edit their own projects and biographies. This innovative approach gave students full control over their portfolios, making the site a dynamic and evolving showcase of talent. The website also employed unique horizontal page scrolling, a cutting-edge design concept at the time, to provide a seamless and engaging browsing experience. This design feature echoed the visual identity of the program, making the user experience not only functional but also memorable.

To further enhance the site’s usability, a sorting system was implemented to organize and display the students’ design works and portfolio lists, ensuring that visitors could easily find and view each student’s work. The website was built to promote the Grad Show, attract industry professionals, and inspire potential employers to discover new talent. It served as an essential tool for students to connect with the design community and for visitors to experience the diverse work being produced by the 2011 graduating class.

The project was a collaborative effort from five talented individuals in the York/Sheridan Design Programs, who together contributed to the development and design of the website. The core idea was to give each student equal visibility through the “YSDN & Co.” logo, incorporating random shapes to add a creative and dynamic element to the site’s aesthetic. The decision to implement horizontal scrolling was a bold and pioneering choice that set the project apart from traditional web design at the time.
