Hand-made Type Designer & Typefaces Book – York/Sheridan Design Program Project

The Hand-made Type Designer & Typefaces Book was a unique and collaborative project undertaken as part of the York/Sheridan Design Program. In this project, each student was assigned the task of researching a renowned type designer and their respective typefaces, resulting in a rich compilation of over 20 type designers and their iconic typefaces.

Design & Production:

  • Format: The book was designed in a distinctive 8.5 x 11 inches format, creating a professional yet approachable size for both research and reference.
  • Cover Design: The cover features a hard green-texture finish, providing both durability and elegance. The golden sleeves inside the book added a touch of luxury, ensuring the book stands out as a premium design artifact.
  • Paper Variety: To reflect the diversity of type design, the book was printed using different types of paper:
    • 16 x 11 inches pages for detailed biographies and stories about the type designers, giving these sections a larger, more spacious layout for easy reading and visual impact.
    • 8.5 x 11 inches pages for showcasing the typefaces, ensuring the design and character of each typeface are presented clearly and effectively.

Each designer’s section includes not only a biography but also detailed insight into their design philosophy and the historical impact of their typefaces. Through this, the book celebrates the craftsmanship and history of type design, from classic to contemporary fonts.

Key Highlights:

  • Comprehensive Research: More than 20 type designers are featured, each with an in-depth exploration of their work, including fonts such as Bodoni, Futura, Garamond, and Helvetica.
  • Handmade Quality: With carefully selected papers and luxurious finishes, the book exemplifies the quality of handcrafted design and attention to detail, making it a valuable reference for design students, professionals, and typography enthusiasts.
  • Educational Value: This project serves as an educational resource, offering insights into the world of type design, typographic history, and the creative processes behind some of the most iconic fonts used worldwide.
